Understanding the Process of Becoming a U.S. Citizen
In this section, you will find a general description of the naturalization application process. Before you apply, be sure that you meet all eligibility requirements and check if you qualify for any exceptions and accommodations.
To apply for naturalization through Form N-400 you generally must be at least 18 years old, be a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) for the required time, demonstrate continuous residence and physical presence, show good moral character, and be able to read, write, and speak basic English.
Common pathways: 5 years as a Green Card holder, or 3 years if you are married to and living with a U.S. citizen. Military service has its own eligibility rules.
Form N-400 is the main application for naturalization. It asks about your background, residence history, employment, travel outside the U.S., family, and questions about good moral character.
Use our in-app N-400 guide to walk through every section of the form, with plain-language explanations, examples, and tips for each question before you file.
You can file Form N-400 online through your USCIS account or by mailing a paper application to the correct USCIS lockbox. Filing online is generally faster and lets you track your case status in real time.
After USCIS receives your application, you will get a receipt notice (Form I-797C) confirming your case number. Hang on to it — you will need it for every step that follows.
It is critical to fill out Form N-400 correctly and truthfully. Inconsistent or incorrect answers between your N-400 and your interview are one of the most common reasons applications get delayed, denied, or trigger additional review. Double-check every answer — dates, addresses, names, and travel history — before you submit.
While USCIS reviews your application, use this app to prepare for the interview and the tests. We recommend going through the sections in this order:
If a biometrics appointment is required, USCIS will mail an appointment notice telling you when and where to appear. At the appointment, a USCIS officer will take your fingerprints, photograph, and signature so the FBI can run background and security checks.
Missing your biometrics appointment without rescheduling can cause USCIS to deny your application — bring your notice and a valid ID.
At your interview, a USCIS officer will place you under oath and review your N-400 answers in detail. The officer will also give you the English test (reading, writing, speaking) and the civics test. Answer truthfully, dress neatly, and arrive early.
After your interview, USCIS will give you Form N-652 with your result. If approved, USCIS sends Form N-445 with the date and location of your Oath of Allegiance ceremony. You officially become a U.S. citizen when you take the Oath and receive your Certificate of Naturalization.
After the ceremony, register to vote, apply for a U.S. passport, and update your records with the Social Security Administration so they reflect your new citizenship.
